DUTCHMEN'S UNUSUAllY EMOTIVE BUT TYPICALLY OVERCOOKED PROG ROCK. THE JUSTIFIABLY maligned genre of prog rock, usually the domain of thoughtful types with thick-lensed glasses, perhaps has a new star here. Ulysses are not quite as patience-trying as many of their contemporaries, and that's largely because they do at least favour vocals and singing over the endless, meandering musical passages that define so much of this stuff. Ulysses home in on personal stories plucked from the real world rather than highbrow concepts about chaos theories, but this doesn't stop them from extending songs to epic lengths. They're hard rather than heavy, studious rather than silly. Not the greatest accolades - but less annoying than you'd expect. FOR FANS OF: Marillion, Dream Theater. STEVE BEEBEE |
